A simple way to search the Excel index

On the Edit menu click on Find.  Type in what you need to search for, e.g. 'G-Rail' and click on OK.
Keep clicking on Find Next until you have located the article you are looking for.

Using the Excel index with AutoFilter

This is best explained with a couple of examples:

1.    Finding all of the MTS articles

Click on the 'drop-down' arrow on the right of cell C1 (Article Title) to reveal this menu:

Click on (Custom...) and then within the Custom AutoFilter dialogue box use the 'drop-down' arrow to select 'contains' and type 'MTS' in the adjacent box.  Click on OK.

The spreadsheet will now display only 6 rows - rows where MTS appears in the Article Title.
Note:  The Row Headers have turned blue and the 'drop-down' arrow in cell C1 is also blue.

To remove the filter and display all rows click on the blue 'drop-down' arrow in cell C1 and then select (All) from the drop-down list.

2.    Finding all articles by Roy Pedder

The obvious way to do this is to click on the 'drop-down' arrow on the right of cell D1 (Author) to reveal this menu:

All authors are listed in alphabetical author.  Scroll down and click on 'Roy Pedder' to reveal 2 articles, however Roy has 5 articles to his name.  One is obvious as the next entry in the list is 'Roy Pedder & Keith Lambert', but if the names had been entered the other way round then this article would have been missed, and there are still 2 more in the index!

A better method

Click on the 'drop-down' arrow on the right of cell D1 (Author) to reveal the drop-down menu.  Click on (Custom...) and then within the Custom AutoFilter dialogue box use the 'drop-down' arrow to select 'contains' and type 'Roy Pedder' in the adjacent box.  Click on OK.

Now all 5 articles will be selected.

As before, to remove the filter and display all rows click on the blue 'drop-down' arrow in cell D1 and then select (All) from the drop-down list.
